The best of VMD: Getting hooked on trials

7/31/2008

Sometimes, you know better but do something anyway. That's how Bob Wark, from Marietta, Ohio, describes his effort in the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association trials competition at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days.

That's because Wark is riding a 1940 BSA M20 World War II military bike in the program.

"It's actually a pretty foolish choice, but I had to try it once," Wark says. "I got one loop in the cross country race yesterday, and I didn't fall, so I took that as a good sign."

Wark, a member of the Ohio Valley BSA Club, has owned the BSA for five years. He's always been a fan of trials.

"Running the old girl through the woods is a challenge," he says. "In some ways, trials is the ultimate skill."

That said, Wark says he might be riding on something else next year.

"I always come to VMD. I've been coming since it was in Athens (Ohio)," he says. "This is the first time I've competed, but I'm hooked. Next year, though, I'm going to be riding an XR200 in the post-vintage class."
